Sylvie Talks Songwriting and Influences

On October 15th, we had the pleasure of sitting down with Silvie in The Masquerade green room shortly before she opened for Trace Mountains.

Speaking with her, it becomes clear she sees herself as a poet first and her real instrument is her lyricism. The production choices and instrumentation put her front and center in a way that highlights how raw and confessional lyrics really are.

There’s a glimmer of hope and comic relief sprinkled throughout the songs and live performances. What may have started as a somber song becomes an anthem of resilience. Silvie shows us she’s not afraid to dance to it –  and we shouldn’t be either.

What's one thing you think people should know about your music?

Silvie: I’d say the thing that inspires me to make music the most is the desire to talk about things honestly that we’re afraid to talk about or say out loud.

With that in mind, who are some of the musical influences that might surprise people?

Silvie: From a lyrical standpoint, one of my first and most influential artists that I listened to was Noah Gundersen.

Silvie: Growing up, I just remember listening to his lyrics and feeling like they were really honest, but also still beautiful and I was really inspired by that.

Is there anyone else who inspires you?

Silvie: Sylvan Esso is one of my favorite artists. I feel like they’re doing their own thing and it feels like they always have been. They just do what they want and make good music and that feels very authentic to me.

If you could choose to open for anyone in the next year, who would it be and why?

Silvie: Dora Jar. I’ve been obsessed with her latest album. It’s called No Way To Relax When You Are On Fire. I’ve listened to it so much.

If there was one lesson you've learned that you could share with other aspiring musicians, what would it be?

Silvie: The thing that helped me the most in writing music is when I realized I didn’t have to put everything into one song.

Silvie: I don’t have to say everything I want to say right now in this one song. There’s always room for more.

Is there anything coming up that you're looking forward to?

Silvie: I’m really excited to tour and make more music.

Silvie just finished a tour with friends and fellow-Texans, Moony and Sack Lunch.
